Meeting a friend for lunch is always a good plan on a hot Summer day. On a tip from a friend, we decided Kingfisher Craft Sandwiches on Barrancas Avenue in Pensacola was the ticket, and the restaurant was calling my name.

The owners, Brian and Amanda, decided to make Pensacola their home and bring their love of organic fresh food to the table. They proudly serve fresh Gulf seafood, local produce, homemade soups, bread, pastries, sauces, and chips made in-house.

When we first entered, daily specials on the board grabbed our attention. So many great choices made it challenging, but I went with the lamb sandwich served on a delicious bun with arugula, horseradish mayo, and a red wine apple pecan sauce. Antoinette chose the Cuban sandwich special with mojo pork, ham, swiss, dill pickles, and Cuban mayo on a crispy baguette. Sides of homemade chips, fried full-length okra, and greens truly made it as good as it gets rounded out our meal.

This is the place to go if you want a home-cooked meal inspired by seasonal options. The funky, retro atmosphere makes you smile. Many windows, friendly staff, and quick service create a wonderful, casual dining experience.

Kingfisher Sandwiches is open Monday through Thursday for lunch from 11 AM until 3 PM and Friday and Saturday for lunch and dinner until 8 PM. We will be back soon because I have my mind set on trying a platter, the buttermilk chicken sandwich, an oyster po'boy, or the shrimp burger, and work our way around the menu. A full bar is in the adjacent Tiki Bar. Did I mention the made-in-house daily desserts?
