Re-enactment of Revolution War "Battle at the Village"

HISTORIC BLAKELY STATE PARK, THE SITE OF A NEW REENACTMENT

Pretty much anybody who’s been around these parts for awhile knows about Historic Blakely State Park and its history. This comingweekend—January 10th and 11th—for the first time, thepark will host a reenactment of the Revolutionary War, known as “Battle at theVillage.”

In 1781, Spanish and British forces clashed in a battle forcontrol of Mobile at “The Village,” part of which would become modern-dayDaphne. 

Saturday will kick off the reenactment with an InfantryDrill at 10 a.m., followed by a Musket Demonstration at 11 and a shortdiscussion about the role of the Gulf Coast in the Revolutionary War. In theafternoon, activities will include an Artillery Demonstration, a Musket Drill,a brief discussion about the battle, and a reenactment of the Battleat the Village. Also on Saturday, there will be cooking demonstrations, andthe Spanish Fort Masonic Lodge will be cooking and selling hamburgers and hotdogs.

Both days, admission will be charged (a nominal fee of $5for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12, and those under 6 free), which willinclude taking part in the day’s activities. Sunday’s activities includeInfantry and Artillery Drills at 11 a.m., followed by a short discussion, and askirmish at noon titled “Tories, Dons and Rebels.”

HistoricBlakely State Park contains more than 2,100 acres of the largest NationalRegister Historic Site in the eastern half of the United States. Pensacola Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven and Blue Jeans

Dress up or dress down for this annual celebration of Ludwigvan Beethoven, under the baton of guest conductor Laura Jackson. This rousing program features the composer’s Symphony No. 2 along with Gioachino Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Wojciech Kilar’s Orawa, John Williams’ Three Escapades featured in Catch Me If You Can, and Kenneth Fuchs’ Rush. López’s Fiesta! Timothy McAlister joins the orchestra on Saxophone.

Mobile Symphony Orchestra

January 17 & 18

Saenger Theatre, Mobile, AL

Dynamic violinist Melissa White is known to MSO audiences for her memorable appearances on our stage with the Harlem Quartet. This season, she’s back as a soloist to perform a concerto by American composer Florence Price. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 “Winter Dreams.” The concert starts at 7:30 on Saturday, January 17 and at 2:30 on Sunday, January 18.
