With their new and permanent location at 809 Nichols Avenue, the Baldwin County Youth Orchestra (BCYO) is tuning up for its spring concert. Planned for May 7th, this concert with its theme of “Classical Favorites” will be held at 7:00 pm at Foley Civic Center.
Who remembers the story we did called Fish Christmas? Probably not many, I’d guess… It was early in our life as a newsletter. Ever since, I’ve wanted to catch up with Dr. Sean Powers, Director of the University of South Alabama's Stokes School of Marine & Environmental Sciences to learn more about their impact on the Scenic 98 Coastal area.
When two students decide that college isn’t their thing, but know that they have always wanted to own their own business, what would be an appropriate name to call their business? Dropout Bakery is the answer.
Grilled oysters, fried oysters, raw oysters, oyster stew; I sound like Bubba Gump and his shrimp choices, yet this is what we tasted at the Annual Fort Morgan Oyster Festival, held the weekend of February 24- 25 at the Beach Club. Since festivals of every kind are held in our area, I expected long lines and crowds, but this festival was like a big private party, in a beautiful setting, with music, games, and incredible oysters!
A few weeks ago, Linda and I ventured north to attend the Monroeville Literary Festival. This two-day event is held annually in the upstairs courtroom of the Monroe County Courthouse, the setting of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. By all measures, it exceeded our expectations.
The 72nd Annual Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival took place this past weekend, and the exclusive broadcast partner was the news and weather team from WKRG News 5. On Friday, I was invited to tag along to watch a full day of festival reporting. By all measures, it was a fun-filled experience!
Market by the Bay has always been a go-to for me because of the delicious fried seafood and gumbo. With two locations in Fairhope and Daphne, I was a frequent visitor. A few years ago, the Fairhope restaurant closed (now the OX Kitchen), and then the Daphne store closed a year later. I was sad to see them go.
Lila Pennington Ryals’s mother died in 1931, just days before her ninth birthday, and her dad didn’t want to care for the last of his six children. She and her younger brother, Buddy, were left to their own devices to feed themselves, manage their health care, get through school, and provide for their safety.
Meeting up for lunch at The Barn at Hope Farm with the dynamic event coordinator, Tonya Dalhaus, was an exciting hour for both of us. We discovered we have a mutual friend, Heather Mitchell, a sketch artist.
Having just returned from my third cruise in Belize, I can report that it is still one of the most beautifully pristine pieces of water a sailor can visit in this part of the world.
You may recall that we did a piece on David Cooper’s book, The Laundry Man for the holiday gift-buying season. When I got a call from my friend, Joe Brown at Portside Advertising about a story on a commercial laundry, I thought there must be something in his water. “Seriously, it’s an incredible story. You should meet Sean Chappell and check it out,” he told me.
Big News! Mobile Ballet Eastern Shore has moved to a new location on Equity Drive in Daphne, Alabama. After years of renting, the dance school has purchased and expanded to a much larger space, with three studios, an area for dressing rooms, and offices.
Full disclosure, Raine Bedsole is one of our closest friends and she is also an extraordinary artist. She was recently selected as one of 9 artists out of more than 250 applicants to complete a sculpture to be placed in The Underwater Museum of Art, less than a mile from the sugar-white sands of Grayton Beach, Florida.
On a recent afternoon in Pensacola, Linda and I met a friend for lunch at BarSteak on Palafox Street. When I walked in the door, a man and woman sitting near the front called out, mistaking me for a friend of theirs. They must have been thinking of George Clooney or Brad Pitt. I get that a lot, so I took the opportunity to stop and introduce myself.
I think we all know what it feels like to be stressed out from your big important job, and one day yell out, “ I just want to work in a plant shop!” Ashleigh McKenzie was just like Samantha Stevens in Bewitched when she wiggled her nose and nodded her head and ”Poof,” she now works in a plant shop!
With Spring Break right around the corner, the excitement is building in the hospitality industry throughout the Scenic 98 Coastal area. I sat down with Steve Hicks and Paul Stewart, two longtime friends and part-time business partners, who will soon be cutting the ribbon on Beach Village Resort, a 71-unit Orange Beach resort.
The beginning of March signals spring is on the horizon and kicks off “festival season.” The Scenic 98 Coastal area has tons of outdoor events coming up this month which will offer a variety of art, shopping, music, food, and entertainment options. Many of these events are free to the public and benefit vital community organizations.
Food meets drink meets good times! Mackenzie Klyce and Max Donaldson own and operate Mobile’s new eatery, the Velvet Pig, located inside the Ice Box at 755 Monroe Street in Mobile.
We did a story at the end of last year on Pensacola’s Grayson Bay Oyster Company. The interview took place at Odd Colony Brewing Company on Palafox Street. As I was talking to Brandon Smith about farm-raised oysters, we enjoyed a Tidal Guide draft beer, made exclusively by Odd Colony.
Try this on for size… How does a fisheries biologist end up with a regional chain of sunglasses and casual fashion stores? That’s what I set out to learn when I met with Joe Jerrigan at his offices at The Wharf in Orange Beach.
Since Casi Callaway stepped away in 2021 from her position as Executive Director to become the first Chief Resilience Officer in the State of Alabama, Mobile Baykeeper has had new leadership. Taking her place as Executive Director at Mobile Baykeeper is William Strickland. I first met William several months ago, when he made a presentation to the Point Clear Property Owners.
I went on a Safari in Gulf Shores to discover a new restaurant. On the way to a beach getaway, some girlfriends and I stopped at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo to find a much-talked-about restaurant, Savanna. As a zoo visiting mother and grandmother, I can say I have never enjoyed a restaurant at a zoo, until now.
Being a musician is hard work. Whether playing in front of an audience of thousands or sitting on the dock of the bay with a couple of friends, musicians always seem to experience pure joy when making music. It doesn't seem like work at all.
“I’ve had an amazing life, and every day is still wonderful,” says Stephen Savage.
