Summer fishing trips are a favorite pastime for locals and visitors to the Scenic 98 Coastal area. The Orange Beach Billfish Classic kicks off the Gulf Coast Tournament Fishing season every year in May, and the Zeke’s Landing Charter Boat Billfish Tournament closes the season in early September.

Although summer is winding down, there are still a few weeks left to scratch that summer fishing itch. There is much less traffic on the water since students have returned to school, vacation traffic has died down, and football season is in full swing. We contacted Captain Skylar Beagle, who operates out of Baldwin County, for some late summer fishing insights.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Captain Skylar has a lifetime of knowledge and experience when it comes to catching inshore fish. He grew up fishing for Speckled Trout, Redfish, Flounder, Sheepshead, Triple Tail, and many other saltwater fish in Mobile Bay. Running fishing charters for the past 15 years, he offers guided trips covering Alabama's inshore waters including Mobile, Daphne, Fairhope, Bon Secour, Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan, Dauphin Island, and Orange Beach.

Captain Skylar’s favorite fish to target this time of year are Speckled Trout and Redfish. September is a transition period, and shallow-water Redfish activity starts to pick up when water temperatures begin to cool. At the same time, deep water Speckled Trout fishing is still productive in late summer.

Clients should expect to have a good time and enjoy being on the water, but the main objective is to catch fish and some days are tougher than others. When inshore fishing, clients use light tackle spinning rods, which make the fight of a nice inshore fish one to remember.

If you have any questions about a trip, don't hesitate to call Skyler. Anglers of all ages are welcome, and it doesn't matter if you are experienced or a first-timer, Captain Skylar enjoys teaching people and strives to make your fishing experience one to remember.
