Re-enactment of Revolution War “Battle at the Village”

Historic Blakely State Park, Spanish Fort, AL

HISTORIC BLAKELY STATE PARK, THE SITE OF A NEW REENACTMENT

By T. Jensen Lacey

Pretty much anybody who’s been around these parts for a while knows about Historic Blakely State Park and its history. This coming weekend—January 10th and 11th—for the first time, the park will host a reenactment of the Revolutionary War, known as “Battle at the Village.”

In 1781, Spanish and British forces clashed in a battle for control of Mobile at “The Village,” part of which would become modern-day Daphne.

Saturday will kick off the reenactment with an Infantry Drill at 10 a.m., followed by a Musket Demonstration at 11 and a short discussion about the role of the Gulf Coast in the Revolutionary War. In the afternoon, activities will include an Artillery Demonstration, a Musket Drill, a brief discussion about the battle, and a reenactment of the Battle at the Village. Also on Saturday, there will be cooking demonstrations, and the Spanish Fort Masonic Lodge will be cooking and selling hamburgers and hot dogs.

Both days, admission will be charged (a nominal fee of $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-12, and those under 6 free), which will include taking part in the day’s activities. Sunday’s activities include Infantry and Artillery Drills at 11 a.m., followed by a short discussion, and a skirmish at noon titled “Tories, Dons and Rebels.”

The address for Historic Blakely State Park is 34745 State Highway 225, Spanish Fort, AL 36527.

Historic Blakely State Park contains more than 2,100 acres of the largest National Register Historic Site in the eastern half of the United States. Throughout the year, the staff of Blakely offers visitors access to all sorts of events, including cruises, camping, cabin rentals, hiking, picnicking, kayaking, self-guided cell phone tours, and more. The park also has an on-site gift shop. Their telephone number is 251.626.0798, and the email is office@blakelypark.com.
