This past Friday, we celebrated a close friend’s 65th birthday by hosting dinner at our house. I knew just what I wanted to serve: fresh-caught fish to grill on the Green Egg. I have this down to a science, so I felt confident it would turn out well. The most important ingredient is purchasing the best type of fresh fish suitable for grilling. That’s where Fairhope Fish House comes in.

One of the first stories we published in Scenic 98 Coastal, one month after we launched in April 2022, was on the three-year-old venture started by Dustin Bedgood and Jake Posy, two local guys who love to fish and decided to make a career out of it. I first became aware of Fairhope Fish House at the Fairhope Farmer’s Market held on Thursday afternoons behind the Fairhope Library. At the time, they had a small booth selling fresh-caught tuna from a large cooler.

They had just moved into the building at the intersection of Greeno Road (US Hwy 98) and Scenic Hwy 98, which offered a real working area for offloading their catch, cleaning the boats, and had a cooler space and a small retail space to serve customers. It’s been fun watching them grow since then.

With three large catboats, they go offshore for deep-water fish like swordfish and tuna and also hit the reefs for fresh grouper, red snapper, or inshore for flounder.. They also contract with local and regional fishermen and offer fresh seafood such as crab meat, oysters, shrimp, Florida stone crab claws, and a wonderful selection of regional fish like golden tile and wreckfish, for example.

The great thing about Fairhope Fish House is that when you sign up for their daily email of what they have for sale that day, they also tell you what they are providing to local restaurants. They also keep some “frozen fresh” items and offer discounts for packages of things like scallops, amberjack, and Atlantic salmon.

Friday afternoon, I stopped by their shop and got the last red grouper from the cooler. It was still whole, and after the salesperson filleted it, it came out to be a little over 3 pounds, thick and fresh, perfect for the grill. He asked how much I wanted, and I said about two pounds. A fellow walked in behind me and took the last filet for his wife and him to eat that night.

Fairhope Fish House is a no-brainer for me. I always run into friends when I stop by, so the secret is out. A few weeks ago, we went to Mobile and had dinner at Hummingbird Way before a show. I had received the Fairhope Fish House email that morning, so I knew what I was going to order before I arrived: sheepshead. It was delicious.

As for Friday night, the Red Grouper was excellent. Cooked on the half shell for about 12 minutes, there wasn’t a morsel left. Fairhope Fish House is a can’t-miss at our house!

With crawfish season upon us, they have live crawfish by the sack as well as boiled crawfish ready for the party. Reserve yours today by calling 251-373-6200.
